Hump Day Hype Up - June 5, 2024

Goodness me, how time flies. One day it’s hump day, and the next is hump day again!

Have you been making the most of every day this past week? What you have done to make sure you’re living in the moment?

This week I’ve been speaking a lot on how you dress being influential to how you feel - the power of a great outfit and the impact it can have on how you stand, how you speak, and most importantly how you feel about yourself on the inside.

DISCLAIMER: I’m not talking about the most expensive brands, or the latest fashion, I’m talking about whatever clothes you own helping you to feel your best.

Which is why, this week’s Hump Day Hype Up is…

Put on your favourite outfit!!

Open that wardrobe, pull out that outfit, and help yourself to feel incredible. Today is your day to shine. We’re using clothes to bring out our inner super star. Consider what clothing you currently have that always makes you feel incredible when you wear it. Incredible like ‘strut into the room with style’ incredible, not like comfy, snuggle on the couch and watch a movie incredible (unless thats what you need today, then so please go right ahead!).

Yes, this is a logical concept. It makes sense that if you look good in the clothes you’re wearing, it will help you to feel good too… but the research actually highlights that it is way more powerful than that.

Psychology researchers found that alongside the simple ‘wearing’ of the clothing to help change the way we FEEL, there’s a step further that brings into play the ‘value’ or ‘meaning’ we assign to each particular piece of clothing. Basically, what you think of your clothes, will change the way you BEHAVE. They coined this term ‘enclothed cognition’. Essentially the symbolic meaning we assign a piece of clothing, so whether we consider the fashion we’re wearing to be ‘arty clothes’ or ‘CEO corporate style’ or even ‘scientific’ in nature, will change the way we behave when we wear it.

What they found was that when people were asked to wear a lab coat their attentiveness and carefulness went up significantly. They then asked participants to wear a lab coat that was described as a ‘doctor’s coat and another one described as a ‘painters coat’. When wearing the doctors coat they found increased sustained attention in comparison to the painters coat. The meaning we assign our clothing also changes the way we act in it.

Let me reiterate that…

When people wore a coat, that was labelled a ‘doctors coat’ they were more likely to pay attention to what was going on. We deem it more important. The coat increases our attention to detail.

Isn’t that wild!!!

Think of what this means for the meaning you assign the clothes in your wardrobe. How differently will you behave if you wear the blazer instead of the t-shirt to your next meet? What influence would wearing the button up shirt instead of the jumper have on the way you perform. Remember, this is our personal assigned meaning we’re adding to the clothing. You determine what makes a piece of clothing special.

For me today, I’m wearing my husbands denim jacket instead of one of my own 3 denim jackets. His is a darker shade of blue, it feels more professional and polished to me. I feel more important in this colour of denim.

I reiterate - it’s wild. And it’s your own perception.

This is why, today’s Hump Day Hype Up is encouraging you to explore the fashion that makes you feel your best.

What pieces of clothing can you put together to give yourself the best chance of having extra energy, extra confidence and that gorgeous pep in your step today?
